Amygdalin, also called vitnamin B17, is the main active ingredient in bitter apricot seeds, and it also can be found in the dried seeds of loquat, apple, peach, plum and other friuts. Amygdalin is recorded in Chinese Pharmacopoeia as the treatment of asthma, cough, and constipation. Now, it is regarded as anticancer agent.

Amygdalin is found in the many fruits and in raw nuts. Bitter apricot has the highest Amygdalin, up to 3%.
The Latin name of apricot is Prunus armeniaca L., whcih is native to China and Japan. Apricot grows on trees that reache 9 meters in height, belong to the family Rosaceae. The leaves are oval and finely serrated, with 5-petaled white flowers. The matured apricots' color varies from green yellow to orange to red.

1. Relieve cough and asthma
Amygdalin can be hydrolyzed into benzaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide which restrains respiratory center. It is useful for cough and asthma caused by different reasons.
2. Cancer treatment
Amygdalin has been used for cancer treatment both as a single agent and in combination with a metabolic therapy program that consists of a specialized diet, high-dose vitamin supplements, and pancreatic enzymes. It has been proposed that cyanide is the active cancer-killing ingredient in Amygdalin, but two other breakdown products of Amygdalin — prunasin and benzaldehyde — may also be inhibitors to cancer cell .

How to take?
Amygdalin can be taken orally as a pill, or given by injection (intravenous or intramuscular). It is commonly given intravenously for a period of time followed by oral maintenance therapy. The incidence of cyanide poisoning is much higher when Amygdalin is taken orally because intestinal bacteria and some commonly eaten plants contain enzymes (beta-glucosidases) that activate the release of cyanide after Amygdalin has been ingested. Relatively little breakdown occurs to yield the cyanide when Amygdalin is injected.
Amygdalin is non-toxic. Cyanide poisoning and death have resulted from Amygdalin and apricot kernel ingestion. Oral Amygdalin is considered 40 times more toxic than intravenous form because of its conversion to hydrogen cyanide by enzymes present in the human intestine. Symptoms of cyanide poisoning (eg, coma, cyanosis, dizziness, headache, hypotension, nausea, neuropathies, ptosis, vomiting) may be potentiated by eating foods containing beta-glucosidase (eg, bean sprouts, carrots, celery, peaches) or by taking high doses of vitamin C.
