1. Depression
Some trials using 5-HTP with people suffering from depression indicate that 5-HTP may work as well as certain antidepressant drugs to treat people with mild-to-moderate depression. Depression has been linked to serotonin deficiency in the brain. Supplementing with 5-HTP may increase the levels of serotonin and reduce symptoms.
Recommended Dosage —— Several trials have found that doses of 100-300 mg daily for 2-4 weeks can improve symptoms of depression.
2. Fibromyalgia
Research suggests that 5-HTP can improve symptoms of fibromyalgia, including pain severity, morning stiffness, and sleeplessness. People with fibromyalgia often have low serotonin levels in their blood. Supplementation with 5-HTP may increase serotonin synthesis in these cases.
Recommended Dosage —— Several trials have reported that 5-HTP supplementation (100 mg three times per day) relieves some symptoms of fibromyalgia.
3. Insomnia
In one study, people who took 5-HTP went to sleep quicker and slept more deeply than those who took a placebo, presumably because it is converted to the chemical messenger, serotonin.
Recommended Dosage —— Researchers recommend 200 mg two hours before bedtime and 400 mg at bedtime for adult for 6 to 12 weeks, while for children with sleep terrors the recommended dosage is 3 mg/kg/day given at bedtime for 20 days.
